Iaido

Aikido and the sword are very much connected in their history.  Many know that most Japanese martial arts were born from sword culture.  Surprisingly,  understanding this important connection, O’Sensei had sword masters teach at Hombu Dojo.  To complement your Aikido training, The Long Island Aikikai now offers classes in  Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū Iaido.  Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū, meaning "peerless, directly transmitted, school of Eishin" is one of the most widely practiced schools of the Japanese martial art of Iaido in the world. This school has an unbroken history of about 450 years.

Iaido is a Japanese martial art dealing with the practice of sword techniques.  Iaido techniques utilize various drawing, cutting, thrusting and resheathing movements that are performed against a imaginary opponent.  The word “Iaido” loosely  translates into English as, “the way of unified presence”.  Thus, Iaido helps sharpen  concentration and improve one's capacity to focus the mind.
