Hagihara at Old LI Aikikai

Long Island Aikikai
10 Fourth Avenue, Bay Shore, NY 11706

Originally founded in 1964, the Long Island Aikikai is the premier Dojo on Long Island and is home to Edward Hagihara, 7th Dan Shihan. We are a traditional Dojo with the mission of preserving and promoting the martial art of Aikido as taught by the founder; Morihei Ueshiba. Hagihara Sensei opened the Long Island Aikikai after playing an instrumental role in the formation of the New York Aikikai.  Originally located in Rockville Centre, the LI Aikikai has a 45-year history of Aikido instruction and, as one of the oldest Dojos in the country, the atmosphere is strongly traditional.  Having close ties with New York Aikikai and Yamada Shihan, the Long Island Aikikai has long been a stopping point for many top visiting instructors. Countless students have come though our doors to train directly under one of Aikido’s pioneers and many have gone on to establish their own Dojos as well.

In the late 80’s the Long Island Aikikai left its Rockville Centre location and operated out of satellite Dojos around Long Island under the name “Long Island Aikido Association.”   This helped bring Hagihara Sensei’s teaching to a wider student base as more people thoughout the island were able to have direct contact with this remarkable Aikido Shihan. But the constant traveling and heavy teaching schedule was demanding and in the winter of 2006, Hagihara Sensei, with the help of his long-time apprentice, reopened the Long Island Aikikai in Bay Shore New York.

The Long Island Aikikai is affiliated with the United States Aikido Federation under the leadership of Y. Yamada Shihan.
