Joining the Long Island Aikikai If you wish to start practicing with the Long Island Aikikai, please take a look our class schedule and come down to one of our locations to watch a class. No appointment is necessary. You may also try a free class to see if Aikido is right for you. If you are interested in trying a free class, please arrive at the Dojo 20 minutes before the start of class. This will give you a chance to introduce yourself to the instructor and fill out the necessary forms. Please familiarize yourself with the rules of the Dojo before taking classes. No gi (uniform) is necessary for your first Aikido class. Just bring loose fitting clothing that covers your elbows and knees. The Long Island Aikikai has men’s and women’s changing rooms for your convenience.
With the exception of our Sunday weapons class, all classes are open to all levels. We have no beginner classes. We find that your Aikido will improve faster when you get to practice with more experienced students. If you are apprehensive, please don't worry. Aikido is all about protecting yourself as well as your partner. Our first rule of practice has always been “safety first.” Therefore all students train at their own pace. This gives Aikido the unique quality of being able to be practiced by men, women and children of all ages. In your first few classes an experienced student will be assigned to work with you to help you get acquainted with the basics of Aikido. If you have special health needs or concerns, please let the teacher and your practice partner know before you begin practicing.
The Long Island Aikikai offers many membership rates. We have discounted rates for youngsters, college students and group rates for family members. For those who can only practice once or twice a week, the Long Island Aikikai offers punch cards as well. The Long Island Aikikai also stocks uniforms of all sizes for your convenience.
