SUMMARY:Special Class with Matthew Hayes
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Hayes started his Aikido training under Hagihara-shihan and the Long Island Aikido Association in 1993\, which kicked off an extensive and intensive career in Aikido. He trained at multiple locations\, including Suffolk Aikikai (under Gene Monteleone-Shihan) and Aikido of Nassau County (under Joseph Nemeth-Shihan) before meeting Donovan Waite-Shihan in 1997. After many years of travelling with Waite-sensei\, he moved to Philadelphia to formally become Uchi Deshi in 2001. He received his Sandan under Yoshimitsu Yamada\, sponsored by Waite-sensei in 2002. Hayes-sensei returned to Long Island in 2003 to begin a dojo\, but due to family and time constraints\, had to close down. However\, he continued his martial arts training under Milton Regis of Kioto BJJ in Sayville\, attaining the rank of blue belt. A skilled practitioner and enthusiastic teacher\, his extensive and decades long study of both Aikido and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu provides the unique opportunity to broach principles of both arts\, giving the chance to apply it in actual practice. For those who are interested in adding more grappling work into their Aikido curriculum\, this is the perfect chance to do so!

SUMMARY:Special Class with Christopher Bradshaw
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this class will take place the 2nd Saturday of every month and will often focus on more practical applications of Aikido technique. \nAbout the instructor: \nChristopher began training in martial arts in 1980\, studying karate\, kung fu and boxing. In 1986 he commenced his training in jiu-jitsu under the instruction of Walsh Sensei (a black belt of Master Bob Malvagno’s) and in 1993 received his black belt in this form. Through his experience as a teacher\, Christopher realized that his real training had just begun and that he had only taken his first steps in learning all that martial arts had to offer. He began looking to expand his knowledge and in 1998 began his study of Aikido under Hagihara Sensei. Chris currently holds the rank of 3rd dan and is a certified teacher with the United States Aikido Federation.

SUMMARY:Special Class with Anthony Fitts
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this class will take place the 2nd Saturday of every month and will often focus on more practical applications of Aikido technique. \nAbout the instructor: \nTony has a long history of martial arts experience\, with 37 years of continuous training. He originally began studying karate alongside his brother in 1972 and rose to the rank of 6th dan in an eclectic system. He was introduced to Aikido in 1979 by Yamada Sensei but it wasn’t until 1995 that he began to actively pursue the study of this art form. Tony started with Yoshinkan Aikido and eventually gained 2nd dan rank in this style. After learning that one of Hagihara Sensei’s former students had opened a USAF affiliated dojo in his area he began training at this new center. Tony now studies at the Long Island Aikikai\, where he is able to experience the peaceful art of Aikido directly under one of its great leaders\, Hagihara Sensei.

SUMMARY:Special FREE Class: Defense Against Knife Attacks
DESCRIPTION:There are two main options when dealing with someone with an edged weapon; Escape (which is always your best option) or defense. If defending yourself is the only option then a person must do so with the environment in mind and with an understanding of edged weapons so that a suitable defense/technique can be executed. \nThis class will look at potential real-life scenarios and present viable techniques that can help an individual when escape is not an option.  Specific focus will be made on addressing various knife attacks and how traditional Aikido joint locks\, atemi\, and submission holds can be used to control tense and dangerous situations. This class will also help develop a person’s awareness and confidence when confronting an edged weapon.
