Our four week introductory course runs the first four Saturdays of every month, For ages 15 and up

This 4 week low cost course is designed to introduce you to the etiquette, culture, techniques, and classes of a traditional Aikido school. If you were ever curious about trying the martial art of Aikido and wanted a taste of all the benefits it had to offer but didn’t want to start with the full Aikido program, then this is the course for you! An introductory course is also a great gift option for the Japanese culture enthusiast in your life!

Please note that the course must be paid for prior to the start of the first class in order to guarantee a spot and a uniform (in person or via Paypal, you can bring cash or check day of). After signing up, you will be sent an email with instructions on payment, introducing the instructors and the Long Island Aikikai, details on what to expect during the course, and fun tidbits on Japanese culture and Aikido.

If you do not receive the email, please check your spam folder. If you still can’t find it, please contact the dojo for a copy. The day before the course begins, your instructor will reach out to you via their personal email for any last minute questions or concerns.

Your uniform will be available to you on the first day of class, but you may also pick it up by contacting the dojo prior to the start of the course.

Benefits of Aikido

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that combines joint locks, throws, and pins with the philosophy of blending and harmonizing with incoming forces. It can be practice slow and methodical, or fast and dynamic, and is adaptable to everyone’s specific needs. Short staff (jo) and Japanese swordwork is also part of the curriculum.

During this 4 week course, we will cover:

    • Dojo etiquette and Japanese culture
    • Safe and proper ways to take falls – ukemi waza
    • Common grabs and strikes
    • Common techniques – nage waza from grabs and strikes
    • Introduce short staff – jo – techniques
    • Introduce sword – bokken/bokuto – techniques

 


 

Course Schedule (Held on the first 4 Saturdays of every month)

    1. First Saturday: Introduction, basic dojo etiquette, Japanese culture, stances, basic exercises, grabs, and introduction to back falling, learn one technique from a grab
    2. Second Saturday: Review back falls, introduction to forward rolling, learn one technique involving forward rolls, introduction to pins, learn one technique involving pin
    3. Third Saturday: Introduction to short staff (jo), learn one solo form, and one paired form
    4. Fourth Saturday: Introduction to sword work (bokken), learn one solo form and one paired form
